ABOUT US
Rose City Freeze-Dry was founded in 1998, now a division of PHC Northwest, Inc.. At Rose City Freeze-Dry our goal is to bring you the freshest, most alive looking dried roses available.
We start with beautiful florist quality roses grown in Hillsboro, Oregon. The Willamette River Valley, renown for its mild climate and excellent growing conditions, produces some of the most breathtaking roses in the world. So much so that Portland, Oregon is known as the The Rose City. Portland's Rose Festival, each year with its Royal Rosarians, Rose Queen, Princesses and Rose Festival Parade, is one of the biggest celebrations of roses anywhere.
Our roses are hand selected and, only when they reach the peak of their natural loveliness, are they Freeze-Dried to lock in the fragrant radiance. This process is slow and labor intensive, but we think the final product is well worth the effort. People are amazed at what they thought was a bouquet of fresh roses is actually a long lasting dry floral arrangement that will hold its beauty over an extended period of time.
Arrangements with freeze-dried roses make wonderful centerpieces, elegant additions to holiday wreaths or exquisite ornaments for a special tree. |
FREEZE-DRYING ROSES
At the peak of their natural beauty, the roses are placed on racks in the freeze dryer and frozen in place. The freeze dryer operates at extremely low temperatures and vacuum pressures. Freeze drying takes place through the process of sublimation. One of the principals of chemistry is that if you lower the pressure you also lower the boiling point. It is possible to lower the pressure with the use of a vacuum pump until the boiling point is actually below the freezing point.
At these low pressures, it is impossible for water to exist in liquid form and so it goes from ice directly to vapor. As the roses warm up, the frozen moisture in them turns into vapor and the roses never thaw as they dry. The water vapor is trapped in an ice bank that operates at below -50 degrees, cold enough to refreeze the vapor even at these low pressures. When the product chamber has warmed to room temperature and no more ice collects in the ice bank, the roses are dry.
